Analysis of the Urban Planning Teachings for a City's Physical Development (Case Study of Safavid Period, Isfahān City)

Abstract

During the Safavid period, there was a suitable platform for the promotion of the Iranian Islamic culture, due to the security and economic prosperity at that time. The purpose of this study was to explain and analyze the urban planning teachings of the Safavid period, and its impact on the physical development of the new urban fabric of Isfahān city. The present research was descriptive-analytic, based on its nature and method. Data were collected through exploring the texts and documents. They were analyzed in a qualitative way, based on the thinking, reasoning and rational analysis. Findings showed that the ideal city in the Safavid period has been influenced by the kind of the worldview of the urban planners. The physical realization of its urban spaces which has been in the form of the transition from the city-location to the city-time, in fact has emerged in a new meaning and form, from the old organization during a process of historical and natural evolution. So, it could be concluded that the urban development during the Safavid period was the reflection of the spatial translation of the religious beliefs of the society and it was influenced by the historical and natural processes of the city, in line with the innovative integration of its qualifications in order to respond to the physical, mental and spiritual needs of the urban community of that period.
