Abstract
Background: The relationship between social justice and the urban environment is complex and multifaceted, because cities are the place of social and economic inequality, poverty, discrimination, and various cultural and ethnic heterogeneities, and these conditions make it a field for studying and analyzing the relationship between social justice and the urban environment. These two concepts are closely related to each other and have been studied from different perspectives, but less have been addressed in a related manner and in the form of urban planning dimensions.
Objectives: This article aims to identify and analyze methods, challenges, solutions and research lines in the ground of the relationship between social justice and urban environment.
Method: In this research, by searching the two main keywords "social justice" and "urban environmental quality" in ScienceDirect's scientific database, first about 112,000 articles, then by refining the search in the title section about 5,000 articles, and then by searching for a combination of keywords 58 completely related articles were selected in the period from 1990 to 2023 to be studied.
Result: The findings show that the concept of a fair urban environment as a common point of communication between social justice and the quality of the urban environment is a complex and multidimensional concept that requires comprehensive and integrated views that include attention to social, economic and environmental aspects. Also, this concept requires recognition and respect for different moral and legal values and criteria, and in practice, it requires the participation and agreement of communities in decision-making processes.
Conclusion: The analysis of the studied articles content shows that the interaction of social justice variables and environmental quality in cities in the form of the term "fair urban environment" includes a new stream of researches related to urban studies, which on the one hand focuses on different dimensions of justice, including social justice, spatial justice, and deals with intergenerational and interspecies justice, and on the other hand, it considers the quality of the environment and its urban dimensions.
